So, if I get this religious blasphemy right. Jesus would be damned because the didn’t go to Allah’s Mosque. Ghandi would be damned because he didn’t go to Jesus’s church. Good people that did all they could to live their lives as Jesus, Ghandi, etc would be damned because they didn’t go to the right blaspheming church?
Well, that isn’t God, at least any God I’ve ever read about. It’s BS, blasphemy and evil. That God is Damned by everything I know about good, right and fair. My God is a tad different. If you were Ghandi, Jesus, etc, or just one that throughout his life did all they could to live as they did – You’re In Baby and Thank You, if there were only more of you. Anything else is blasphemy of all I know about of God and God’s Will. His words never start in deceit and lies and never end on them.
BTW, God = God, entity, energy, nature, karma, appropriate etc. And if god is just energy, nature, karma or nothing, I’ll still be happy with the way I lived my life. Just don’t start no sh!t, won’t get no sh!t and if I can help you – seem to be deserving – I will.
It’s Not Rocket Science, or even that hard, most of the time.

Will "Aliens" Play A Role In The Arrival Of Antichrist?

Scripture spends a considerable amount of time describing the events that will unfold immediately prior to the Day of the Lord – perhaps three to four years before the Tribulation. Is it possible that we are living in this period now? If not, how distant might it be? And what conditions may prevail during this volatile phase?
Two or three decades ago, those students of Bible prophecy dedicated to the pretribulational prophetic model were quite reluctant to say that we could identify present events as fulfilled prophecy. They readily agreed that we were near the end of the Church Age, but were reluctant to admit that we could identify unfolding events as connected with any particular time.
They were willing to concede that the prophetic stage had been set: Israel was back in the Land; global financial power was being concentrated in the hands of a few oligarchs; social restraints were collapsing; superweapons were falling into the hands of power-crazed rebels, dedicated to the annihilation of Israel and the United States. But they wouldn’t say that prophecy, in plain terms, was being presently fulfilled.
Today, that has all changed. While some are still reluctant, many leading prophecy teachers are quick to say that Bible prophecy is unfolding before our eyes. Israel, the Middle East and the global economy are shaping up in precisely the way the ancient prophets and apostles said they would. Naturally, our tendency is to urge things along so that the promised return of the Lord will come sooner. But watching requires restraint and self-discipline.
In this era of increasing discussion (and not a little argument) about the timing of the rapture, we are faced with the challenge of placing certain events in some sort of chronological order. Some apparently think that events will fall into place virtually overnight.
In Christian dialogue, there is a tendency to overlook the logistics that are naturally involved in the orderly development of events. Time is required for socioeconomic, military and political realities to come to fulfillment.
As we look ahead, we can see a number of prophesied events that haven’t come together yet. For example, the prophesied Mideast wars haven’t happened yet. Damascus still stands. Earthquakes rumble here and there, but they haven’t yet become a worldwide phenomenon that catches the attention of the nations. The prophesied famine and pestilence are far from universal.
On the other hand, things are happening fast! We watch the world of genetics and the horrifying advances in human/animal hybridization. We observe increasing demonic visibility in the form of the modern “UFO/alien” mythology, coupled with a growing social consciousness that the fallen ones who once plagued the Earth are making themselves observable once again. Technology can now interconnect microchips with the human brain. Artificial intelligence is coming online. “Supersoldiers,” if not already in service, are perhaps within a year or two of being utilized in field exercises. Robotics are quickly approaching the level of human facility. Universal surveillance and global control of society are now conceivable realities. The Antichrist system is becoming visible as security agencies around the world multiply exponentially.
But even given the current state of affairs, there seems to be some time left before all these events coalesce into the massive formation of a world empire. The “beast” cannot rise to power in an instant.
Events require a certain passage of time. Take, for example, the rise to power of a political figure. After he is selected, he must raise money, either as cash or promised contributions. Agreements must be reached and contracts signed. All these activities must fit into a predictable flow of events. Notices go out, phone calls are made, rallies and speeches are scheduled. More money is raised as television, newspaper and radio time is purchased. More time passes until election day, which comes and goes. The candidate has won. Finally, as he is sworn in, he settles into the daily business of political office. Two or three years have passed.
The same general process is incumbent upon the rising to power of a dictatorship. He must gain initial recognition – perhaps as an elected figure – and then take power by any means possible. In the process, he must convince the general population that he is worthy of their trust. Finally, in a sweeping revolution, he exerts his will.
One day in the not-too-distant future, a rider on a white horse will go forth in a similar way. His efforts will be directed toward establishing a dictatorship, and they will require a certain amount of time. The following well-known verses seem to depict just such a process, as the office of this candidate is focused upon gathering power through conquest:
“1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. 2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer” (Rev. 6:1,2).
This narrative is generally said to depict the rise of the Antichrist, a process that will naturally consume a fairly long period of time and a significant transfer of power (“conquering, and to conquer”). The prophet Daniel once had a vision of this time- consuming process:
“7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. 8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things” (Dan. 7:7,8).
The “coming up” of the little horn seems to require some time for achievement, and the overthrow of three others. Again, time is required … the time before the Tribulation. And his power is supernatural.

A Supernatural Overview

There is general agreement among Christians that we are either very close or actually within the brief time leading to the seven-year Tribulation … The Day of the Lord. Many expositors are in agreement that the single event that marks the beginning of this period of judgment is the signing of a covenant, mentioned in Daniel 9:27:
“27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”
The Antichrist will, through “strong delusion,” as Paul terms it in Second Thessalonians 2:11, rise to power in a cloud of metaphysical strength that will seem authentic to those who watch him. He will operate counter to the message of Christ, and substitute himself in place of Christ.
But before he can do this, the delusion must be developed in the minds of those who will blindly submit to his rule.

Pay particular notice to the word, “delusion.” It tells us that those who believe in the Antichrist will wrongly interpret what they see in him. They will think it comes from God. Daniel 9:27 speaks of “abominations,” which we envision as dark conjuring and occultism, empowered by the emissaries of Satan. But those who view him as messianic will see his powers as blessings.
Many have written about the esoteric societies of initiates who brought Hitler to power. Their exotic names … “Society of the Golden Dawn,” and “Thule Society,” masked truly evil, Satanic movements that appealed to ancient avatars for their power.
These spiritual manifestations will be the power behind Antichrist’s throne. For a long time, Bible scholars have linked occurrences of dark powers to latter-day prophecy. One of the best-known is the late Dave Hunt. Thirty years ago, in his book, Peace, Prosperity and the Coming Holocaust, he examined the New Age Movement in prophecy.
He wrote, “With impeccable scientific credentials and one of the world’s top ufologists, Jacques Vallee has concluded after 20 years of investigation that UFOs may be psychologically programming us for some ultimate deception that is too horrible even to imagine as yet.” [p. 112]
He wrote these words in 1983, before the UFO phenomenon had emerged to the point that is now common. In his book, he made it obvious that he believed the Antichrist would rise in a wave of demonic demonstration that the world would interpret as alien powers from outer space. He was an early leader in the realization that the ancient fallen ones were rising again, and would prepare a global vision – almost a hallucination – of heaven on Earth. This is without a doubt, the ultimate delusion, and it’s happening now.
In Daniel 11:38, 39, which gives details of the Antichrist’s rule, we find exactly this idea expressed with absolute clarity:
“38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. 39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain” (Dan. 11:38,39).
For more than a century, Satanic initiates have conjoined their plans in the anticipation that a god of forces will bring a world leader to power. Just as Dave Hunt believed three decades ago, we are convinced that we are living in the latter stages of Antichrist’s unveiling. The ufonauts are not extraterrestrial beings; they are interdimensional beings … exactly as they are described in the Bible. We have almost arrived at what he called a “… deception that is too horrible even to imagine as yet.”

From the Roswell incident in 1947 to the present day, we have accrued sixty-six years of the progressive unveiling of dark heavenly forces, as described by Paul in Ephesians 6:12 when he wrote of them: “12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
As this is written, it has become “normal” to record two thousand UFO sightings per month in the United States alone! Paul is describing the nature of the enemy that has resisted the body of Christ throughout the Church age. Paul also characterizes the church as the restraining force that inhibits the rise of Satanic world power until the close of the age at the rapture. At that time, the restraining force of the Holy Spirit will be removed from the Earth. Then, the dark forces will be free to elevate the Antichrist to power.
It is safe to say then, that we are now living within a very short time of seeing a rapid succession of supernatural events. This, of course, suggests that the rapture is near. In no way can we predict the date of the rapture, but bizarre events, coupled with social and environmental instabilities will indicate that our watchfulness should rise to its maximum level.
What will the period before the Tribulation look like? Among other things, it will acquire increasingly powerful overtones of the supernatural … the bizarre and the highly technical will merge into the arrival of deceptive marvels. They will bring forth the Antichrist:
“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders” (II Thess. 2:9).

Zephaniah’s Warning

The prophet Zephaniah wrote to a latter- day audience about the Day of the Lord. He warns Israel that the day is “near.” In other words, his prophecy is aimed at precisely the period we are targeting: possibly the three or four years prior to the Day of the Lord.
He addresses latter-day Israel, which of course, assumes that Israel must be in a regathered state of existence, exactly as we see it today. His warning focuses upon the pretribulational period of time under discussion:
“14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. 15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness” (Zeph. 1:14,15).

Here, Zephaniah joins other Old Testament prophets who issue similar warnings to those in Israel who have eyes to see and ears to hear. He warns them to get ready for the coming Tribulation:
“1 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; 2 Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’s anger come upon you. 3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’s anger” (Zeph. 2:1-3).

The New Testament View

Remarkably, the Apostle Paul, writing in First Thessalonians, echoes Zephaniah’s words. He begins with a strange statement that seems out of place or even inappropriate. But once understood, it is one of the most encouraging verses in the Bible:
“1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness” (I Thess. 5:1-5).
Paul opens with a statement about the very time period now being discussed … the last few years before the Tribulation. He says that he doesn’t need to tell us about the approach to that period. Why? No doubt, Paul believes that the Old Testament prophets and the statements of Jesus give us all the information we need. And indeed, they do!
We know that the Day of the Lord will come under the cover of a grand delusion. We are now conscious of that great deception … that the Antichrist will rise to power with the help of alien gods.
Paul then notes that there will be the mistaken idea that all is well … right up until the opening moments of the Tribulation. Paul’s clear assertion is that those in Christ will not be blind to the approach of that horrific day. He urges us to watch and comfort one another with the thought that we’ll be taken home before its opening.

In fact, his clear belief is that the presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit acts to hold back the dark forces of Satan until the very moment of its lifting up from this dimension into the presence of the Lord.
Today, some criticize the preoccupation with the narrative of the ancient Nephilim who came in the days of Noah, and will return at the time of the Tribulation. The plain fact is that it happened then, and it’s happening again.

How Can We Tell?

In many different ways, Scripture tells us that we are enlightened by the indwelling Holy Spirit, and that we will not be ignorant of the times. Specifically, we will be sensitized to the near approach of the Tribulation. For the past forty to fifty years, many Christian pastors, teachers and writers have stated that the Lord’s return for His church is near.
They have watched the burgeoning growth of alien spiritual power and presence. They have noted the socio-economic instabilities and the myriad complexities of the Middle East. Earthquakes and super-storms are happening with greater frequency.
And as Mark Biltz has pointed out, we’re within a few months of witnessing the confluence of a fourfold series of lunar eclipses on Jewish feast days. Furthermore, they appear before and after a total Solar eclipse. Since the eclipsed Moon takes on a reddish hue when eclipsed, they are called “Blood Moons.” Such astronomical rarities have always been an indicator of some significant event in the history of Israel.
The prophet Joel writes that this is the phenomenon that will warn of the proximity of the Tribulation:
“31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call” (Joel 2:31,32).
All the visual elements are in place. The dark principalities of the heavens are become more visible. Paul said it first: He said we don’t have a need for him to write to us when these things are coming. Now we know why. We have a special spiritual sensitivity that floods our consciousness. We’ll know that we’re there. The increasing coalescence of sinister power was prophesied long ago. With increasing intensity, this is what the next few years will look like. We will know the times and seasons.

This would have been much cheaper and much more effective.”
Igor Ostretsov, nuclear scientist and manager during 1986 Chernobyl disaster, Jan. 22, 2014: “It shouldn’t be forgotten that radioactive emissions at the Fukushima power plant are still taking place all the time since the beginning of the catastrophe. The reactors are cooling, the plant’s workers don’t know what they should do with the water that cools the reactors, and simply pour it into the sea. This may lead to nothing than elimination of fish resources, however toughly controlled the process may be.”

World's 85 richest people have as much as poorest 3.5 billion

The tiny elite of multibillionaires, who could fit into a double-decker bus, have piled up fortunes equivalent to the wealth of the world’s poorest 3.5bn people, according to a new analysis by Oxfam. The charity condemned the “pernicious” impact of the steadily growing gap between a small group of the super-rich and hundreds of millions of their fellow citizens, arguing it could trigger social unrest.
It released the research on the eve of the World Economic Forum, starting on Wednesday, which brings together many of the most influential figures in international trade, business, finance and politics including David Cameron and George Osborne. Disparities in income and wealth will be high on its agenda, along with driving up international health standards and mitigating the impact of climate change.
Oxfam said the world’s richest 85 people boast a collective worth of $1.7trn (£1trn). Top of the pile is Carlos Slim Helu, the Mexican telecommunications mogul, whose family’s net wealth is estimated by Forbes business magazine at $73bn. He is followed by Bill Gates, the Microsoft founder and philanthropist, whose worth is put at $67bn and is one of 31 Americans on the list.
Other well known names include the business magnate Warren Buffett, whose estimated worth is $53.5bn, and Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, with $23bn.
The world’s richest woman, Liliane Bettencourt, sits on a family fortune of $30bn derived from L’Oréal, the cosmetics company. According to Forbes, the richest person in the UK (and 89th in the world) is the Duke of Westminster, whose property empire has boosted his wealth to $11.4bn.
Carlos Slim Helu, the Mexican telecoms mogul, is the world’s richest man, with a worth of $73bn Oxfam calculated that almost half the world’s wealth – $110trn – is owned by just 1 per cent of its population. It said that 70 per cent of people live in countries where the gap between the rich and poor has widened in the last 30 years.
“This massive concentration of economic resources in the hands of fewer people presents a significant threat to inclusive political and economic systems,” the charity said. “People are increasingly separated by economic and political power, inevitably heightening social tensions and increasing the risk of societal breakdown.”
Winnie Byanyima, Oxfam’s executive director, who will attend Davos, described the gulf between sectors of society as staggering. “We cannot hope to win the fight against poverty without tackling inequality. Widening inequality is creating a vicious circle where wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, leaving the rest of us to fight over crumbs from the top table,” she said.
Oxfam is calling on the business chiefs gathering at Davos to promise to support progressive taxation and not dodge their own taxes, refrain from using their wealth to seek political favours and demand that companies they own or control pay a living wage. In a report last week the forum warned that income disparity leading to social unrest could have a significant impact on the world economy over the next 12 months.
There was a “lost” generation of young people coming of age who lacked jobs and the skills for work, the report said. This could easily boil over into protests over inequality and corruption. Jennifer Blanke, the forum’s chief economist, said: “Disgruntlement can lead to the dissolution of the fabric of society, especially if young people feel they don’t have a future. This is something that affects everybody.”

‘Ogre’ of deflation threatens eurozone

Stagnation, jobless growth and deflation will be among topics debated at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos this week. Elites from politics, business and academia will gather with the international economic backdrop looking rosier than in many years.
Nevertheless, Christine Lagarde, right, head of the International Monetary Fund, is expected to repeat her warning that advanced countries are flirting with deflation. “If inflation is the genie, then deflation is the ogre that must be fought decisively,” she said in Washington, referring to a recent dip in eurozone annual inflation to just 0.8 per cent.
The response from the president of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, with whom she will share a panel at Davos, will be watched closely. Ben Chu

The Global Plutocracy

On the eve of the annual spectacle of parasitic wealth and power that is the World Economic Forum in the Alpine resort town of Davos, Switzerland, the Oxfam charity has issued a report warning of the unprecedented growth of social inequality throughout the world.
Describing a planet in the malevolent grip of handful of plutocrats, the report states that the richest 85 people in the world control as much wealth as the bottom fifty percent of the world’s population—3.5 billion people! It notes that the richest one percent today controls 46 percent of the world’s wealth. Oxfam writes: “The wealth of the one percent richest people in the world amounts to $110 trillion… 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the world’s population.”
The report includes a chart showing that since 2008, the United States has had the largest increase in social inequality of any developed country.

The impoverishment of the working class on the one side and further enrichment of the financial elite on the other have accelerated since the Wall Street crash of that year. While the wealth of the world’s billionaires has doubled, there are today over 1 billion people living on less than a dollar per day, and nearly half the world’s population, more than 3 billion people, subsist on less than $2.50 per day.
The same day Oxfam issued its study, the International Labor Organization reported that the number of unemployed people worldwide grew by 5 million in 2013, to 202 million. The ILO predicted that the ranks of the unemployed would continue to rise in 2014.
There is no parallel in human history to the immense concentration of wealth that exists today, nor to the extremes of parasitism and decadence that constitute the “new normal.” Contemporary capitalism—what the ruling class and its political and media flunkies call the “free enterprise system”—has created a world in which every policy decision is dictated by the need to protect and increase the wealth of an infinitesimal portion of the world’s population.
This global plutocracy—by definition, a society governed by the wealthy—generates a huge and ever-increasing portion of the ruling elite’s wealth not from the production of useful products and expansion of society’s productive capacities, but from the manipulation of money, speculation and outright swindling—essentially criminal activities that are destructive of the productive forces.
A few hundred people, backed by an army of bribed politicians, academic apologists, intelligence spooks, experts of all sorts and the repressive force of the military and police, hold civilization by the throat and threaten to destroy it to satisfy their insatiable greed.
This social—or, to be more precise, anti-social—element is virulently hostile to the people, contemptuous of democratic rights, and militaristic.
In its effort to expand its personal wealth, it relentlessly attacks the living standards of the working class—the vast majority of the population. All over the world, governments controlled by the plutocrats impose ever more painful austerity, cutting wages, slashing jobs, dismantling social programs, closing schools, gutting health care. State treasuries are emptied to provide bailouts to the banks and corporations and central banks pump trillions into the financial markets to drive up stock prices, corporate profits and CEO pay. All legal restrictions on profit-making are lifted.

To deal with the opposition of the workers, governments are systematically criminalizing organized resistance by the working class. In countries across Europe, every significant strike is met with legal bans and police violence.
Petrified at the prospect of social revolution, they are putting in place the infrastructure of a global totalitarian police state, as revealed by the revelations of former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
Competing cliques of plutocrats, using their national states as bases of operation, invade weaker countries and occupy and plunder them without mercy, inflicting death and destruction. In the struggle against their rivals for control of territories, markets, resources and cheap labor, they turn the planet into an armed camp and threaten to plunge mankind into a third world war, this time with the prospect of nuclear annihilation.
The rich and the super-rich will be on display this week at Davos, the yearly event at which government officials and leaders of global agencies such as the United Nations, the European Union, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund come to pay obeisance to billionaire bankers and corporate CEOs.
The global financial elite is preparing, in the words of one commentator, “to jet to the World Economic Forum 5,000 feet up in the Swiss Alps in their helicopters, mink-clad trophy wives in tow.” The cost of attending the conference, estimated by CNN at around $40,000 per person, is about 50 percent greater than what a typical worker in the US makes in a year.
This conference has announced that the “problem” of social inequality will be a central topic of discussion.
The masses all over the world are becoming increasingly outraged over this criminal layer, which they hate and despise. It is only a matter of time before that anger is transformed into action.
The moneyed elite is haunted by the specter of social upheaval and revolution. They received a taste of it three years ago in the mass working class uprising that brought down the Mubarak dictatorship in Egypt. They have seen social explosions in Europe and anticipations of coming upheavals in the United States.
That they have been able to hold onto power is above all due to the treachery of the trade union bureaucracies, aided by their apologists in the right-wing organizations that call themselves “left,” such as the International Socialist Organization in the United States, the New Anti-capitalist Party in France, the Left Party in Germany, and Syriza in Greece.
The more perceptive and far-sighted defenders of the capitalist system are warning that the present situation is unsustainable. Last week, the Financial Times ’ chief economic commentator Martin Wolf penned a comment entitled, “Failing elites threaten our future,” in which he warned of the growing threat of social revolution.
Citing the 100th anniversary of World War I, the first global catastrophe that signaled the death agony of capitalism and precipitated the Russian revolution three years later, Wolf warned that the “globalized economic and financial elite … have become ever more detached from the countries that produced them …The narrow distribution of the gains of economic growth greatly enhances this development. This, then, is ever more a plutocracy.”
Since the financial breakdown of 2008, he wrote, the “economic, financial, intellectual and political elites” have discredited themselves. “If elites continue to fail,” he concluded, “we will go on watching the rise of angry populists. The elites need to do better. If they do not, rage may overwhelm us all.” The people of the world are confronted with the question: What is to be done with this anti-social and criminal layer that is strangling the planet? Nothing can be changed by appealing to the “better angels” of the plutocracy, as Oxfam would do. Nor by appealing to the elite’s rational faculties, as Wolf seeks to do.
As a matter of social hygiene and basic survival, the wealth of this parasitic layer must be expropriated. The working class, organized as an independent political force, must seize it and use it to meet crying social needs—jobs, health care, education, housing, nutrition, access to culture and art.
The death-grip of the plutocrats over finance and industry must be broken. The banks and corporations must be taken out of private hands and placed under public ownership and democratic control.

Radiation at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant has now exceeded more than eight times the radiation limit set by the Japanese government – presenting new concerns for problems that many say are exacerbating.
The largely government-owned Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) admitted that radiation levels had elevated to an estimated 8 millisieverts per year (mSv/y) outside of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in December.
This greatly eclipses the Japanese government-set limit of 1 mSv/y, put in place as part of the officially-sanctioned reactor decommissioning plan for the disaster-stricken nuclear plant as a safety measure to diminish the level of harmful effects on the surrounding areas so that the exclusion zone can eventually be lifted.
According to NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, the plant was measuring at below the required 1 mSv/y benchmark back in March 2013, but the increasing emission of beta-rays from the contaminated water, and particularly strontium-90, stored in above-ground tanks was spiking these levels. However, the Asahi Shimbun reported that a very high level of 7.8 mSv/y was recorded back in May 2013.
Official media accounts blamed the approximately 1,000 above-ground storage tanks, explaining that the metal tank containers reportedly amplify the beta-rays to create stronger X-rays and, thus, higher readings.
Asahi carried this account of the official explanation: “Beta rays released from radioactive strontium and other substances in the water reacted with iron and other elements in the storage tank containers to generate the X-rays, the officials said.”
TEPCO and the Japanese government knew about elevated radiation, but didn’t bother to tell the public
Government officials admit, as NHK reports, that they have been aware of the issue of beta-ray emission for “a certain period of time” but have not addressed it due to overriding concerns with the volume of contaminated water – some 300-400 tons of which is leaking into the Pacific Ocean on a daily basis.
The Asahi Shimbun revealed January 8 that TEPCO had been hiding public disclosure of more than 140 measurements showing excessive strontium levels – claiming at the time that they were “wrong,” because they were above the total beta-ray numbers in some cases.
Company officials “insisted” that there was no attempt to conceal information, but rather that the concerns were over accuracy. TEPCO claims that it will release “corrected” reading numbers by the end of the month after reconciling them for inconsistencies.
Once again, both Japanese government ^[2] and TEPCO officials were complicit in keeping the truth from the public, both there among the Japanese population and abroad in international circles.
A memorandum of cooperation between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Fukushima ^[3], and also the Fukui Prefecture, was recently revealed, proving that a confidentiality clause exists between the United Nations-level atomic safety agency and TEPCO officials, allowing proprietary information to be kept from disclosure and to be restricted under classification. This agreement pertains in particular to the decontamination of the Fukushima plant, the waste management of radioactive materials and the release of surveys on the radiological effect on human health conducted by the Fukushima Medical University.
Since public admissions that Fukushima had reached levels of 8 mSv/y, officials have been scrambling to increase monitoring and mitigation strategies.
Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority has been meeting in recent days to evaluate how to manage these excessive levels and minimize the amount of escaping radiation ^[4], as efforts have been made to increase monitoring stations in the surrounding areas of the exclusion zone.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority effectively doubled the number of radiation monitoring devices it had set up, expanding its deployment of 446 instruments to 815. These nearly 400 extra monitors were installed in a reported 12 cities, towns and villages in the area. The devices allow testing of the air just above the ground at 10-minute intervals.
The full scale of effects has yet to be seen, as radiation levels continue to increase and the control of contaminated water remains an uphill battle.
